This year for the Oklahoma Sugar Arts Show I entered 2 catagories,
the masquerade mask and the gingerbread house.
Everything on the mask and the fabric background are edible.
This years house was modeled after the Castle Marne in Denver CO. It was definatly a challenge. First I baked up my walls and poured my windows. I started a month out and it took me 64 hours. But I finished 9 days before the competition so that was a plus.
Then I cooked up 3 batches of gingerbread, with different amounts of brown and black food coloring. Then I cut them into strips in different sizes to look like stones. Then I glued them on in different patterens. I used a Dremel tool to carve decorative pieces over doors and windows.
After most of the wall had stone work, I glued the walls to my display board.
Then I added the front door and the porch. After I got the proch done, I tore it off and did another one. This is the beginnings of the first porch. If you look at the finished photos you will see it is completely different.
Next came the roof.
My roofing material this year was Black Jack gum cut to look like slate shingles. My house smelled like black licorice for 2 weeks. Once I got all my gum on we got a LOT of rain. All of the sudden there was this thing called humidity that I am not accustomed to. My roof started to sag and with my dads help and some of my left over pieces we got the it all braced up. There was still a slight sag in the end but nothing like it was.
Here is the finished house. I think it turned out pretty cool. Of course I now see things I would have done differently but every year I learn something new. The chimney and the walkway are made of chocolate Pez, grass is fondant and green royal icing. Flowers are icing, birds are fondant, the walkway is whole wheat flour.
My sister suggested I add a mail box and a welcome mat. So I added just a little bit of NM to it.
My dad suggested that I add some roof finials and a weather vein. Love how they turned out.
Heres some of my detail work. There were little birds and even made some flower boxes.
Here is my finished house and a photo of the actual house.
